Rituals of Jagannath Puri Darshan

The rituals of the Jagannath temple start with Morning Abhisekh and the day the temple begins with the Arti which is called Mangala Arti followed by the Sanan Purnima, during which the idols are bathed with 108 jars of water. All the devotees gather to witness this sacred baithing ceremony.

After the Mangla Arti, the idols are offered morning malas which consist of fragrant and fresh flowers, tulsi leaves, and sandalwood paste. The deities are adorned with new clothes and flower garlands. Devotees get to experience having the darshan of the deity dressed in their morning attire.

After this, a simple breakfast is offered to the deity at 8.30am, which includes items like fruits, milk, sweet popcorn, ripe banana, curd, chipped-coconut and sweets. Devotees believed that consuming the Prasad is highly auspicious.

Then after Breakfast Sakala Dhupa is the morning bhog and it is the main offering of the day served at 10.00am. The main priest Mahasuara is responsible for cooking ensuring that the food is prepared with utmost purity and devotion.

This offering includes rice, dalma, vegetables, sweets and more. Devotees after having the Darshan consume the Mahaprasad, the food offered to the Jagannath which is distributed at the Ananda Bazar.

Then the time for the Sandhya Arti which is the evening at 5:30 p.m, this ritual performed to brighten the idols. Devotees again gather to witness this ritual including the offering of lamps, prayers, mantra chanting, and incense.

After the sandhya arti, the evening bhog is offered to the deity. This meal is very similar in structure to the morning Bhog and includes several vegetarian dishes.

After the evening bhog, the deities are dressed in their night-time attire. The deities are adorned with specific clothing and ornaments. The idols are then offered milk and fruits.

Timing of the Jagannath Puri Darshan

Jagannath temple darshan timings are 05:00 am to 10:00 pm, offering free darshan to all devotees.  Dedicated to lord Jagannath, the temple is open on all days of the week. The temple timings are also the same for all days.

Rules for Darshan

Devotees are requested not to touch Statues or Idols inside the Temple, lighting deep inside the temple at the designated place by the devotees will be permitted.

• It is allowed to carry flowers, and bhoga inside the Temple but such items shall be placed at pre-designated places as allocated by the Temple administration.
• Partaking of Mahaprasad is allowed in a designated place inside Ananda Bazar. Collector of Puri finalize the operational modalities in this regard, by convening a meeting of concerned Nijogs and Temple Officials.
• Chewing Tobacco / Paan and spitting inside the Temple premises is strictly prohibited.
• There will be a separate queue for differently abled devotees and people for darshan.
• There is a complete ban on carrying Polythene Bags inside the Temple

Facilities for Darshan

To facilitate the devotees’ hassle-free Darshan and control cowed, barricades have been provided at the main entry of the temple and end at the inner courtyard which is called Kirtan Chakadda for the movement of the devotees.

As shoes, sandals, leather articles camera, and other gadgets are not allowed on the premises of the temple, the temple authority has provided free mobile and shoe stand for the devotees.

Free services of battery-operated vehicles are available from the Jagannath Ballav Parking place to the main gate of the temple for carrying senior citizens and physically challenged people.

Free First Aid services with an experienced physician are available in the shree Jagannath Temple office inside the temple. Free ambulance service is also available from the temple to the headquarters of the hospital.

R.O. plants have been established inside the temple to provide devotees with hygienic drinking water.

Four guest houses Viz. Neelachal Yatri Niwas, Bhakta Niwas, Neeladri Bhakta Niwas, and Shree Gundicha Bhakta Niwas comprise Ac and non-Ac rooms. Online booking is available on their website.

There are five informative centers Shree Jagannath Temple administration located at the temple’s main gate, Puri railway station main platform, shree Gundicha Temple, Sea Beach, and at Bhubaneswar Jayadev Bhaban. Donations for the Temple fund are also received from the intending devotees in the centers.
