Amarnath Cave is one of the most popular Hinduism pilgrimage sites. Amarnath cave is situated at a height of 3,888m and located in Jammu and Kashmir. Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Amarnath Cave is considered one of the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva.
Every year thousands of devotees undertake the Amarnath Yatra, organized by Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board. There is an ice stalagmite resembling the Shiva Linga inside the Amarnath cave that waxes during May to August and gradually wanes thereafter. This lingam is believed to grow and shrink according to the phases of the moon, and reaches its maximum height during the summer festival.
According to Hindu mythology, Amarnath cave is the cave which is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his divine consort Parvati. There are two other ice formations that represent Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva’s son, Lord Ganesha.
Amarnath Cave is accessible only during the Shravan months of hindu calendar during July-August. There are two routes for undertaking the Amarnath Yatra through Baltal or Pahalgam route. The shortest route is through Baltal, and has a steeper trekking route and the Pahalgam route is longer than baltal route and is generally chosen by most of the devotees.
It takes about 4-5 days to reach Amarnath cave through this longer route which is around 92 km. Helicopter services are available for tourists by private operators on both of these routes. It is necessary to make advance bookings and get registered to undertake the holy pilgrimage to Amarnath.
Amarnath Cave and Temple is not accessible for visitors all around the year. The Amarnath Yatra is available for a specific period and is announced each year. It usually begins on the auspicious day of Skanda Shasti (as per the Hindu calendar) in July month and ends with Shravan Purnima on the Raksha Bandhan in August. The ideal time to visit Amarnath cave is July-August.
The Amarnath cave is considered as one of 51 Shakti Pithas, the temples of the Indian subcontinent commemorate the location of the fallen body parts of the Hindu Goddess Sati.
During the past fifty years, the ice Shivling has shrunk in size. While weather does affect its shape and size, many environmentalists claim global warming, responsible for the condition.
