This District was created as another district after being bifurcated from Sambalpur District on 1 January 1994.

There is a temple of Goddess “Banadurga” and the temple of Lord Shiva located at the top of the ghat. A natural stream flows inside the temple premises which makes this temple more attractive. Katasar Ghat area is very peaceful and attracts visitors for its spiritual atmosphere.
Gohira Dam is located at a distance of 28 km from Deogarh Town in Reamal Block. Gohira Dam is the best place for picnics. This dam was constructed in 1981.
