Dhauli

Dhauli also known as Dhauli Giri Hills, is located on the bank of Daya River which is situated 8 km away from the capital city of Odisha, known as Bhubaneswar. One of the must visiting attractions of Khordha District in Odisha. Best month to visit is during the winter season from the month of November to February as winter is pleasant.

Giri hills are surrounded by forests and the Daya River. It’s a popular hill of Odisha as it holds importance in the history of Odisha as well as of India during Ashoka region.

The battle of Kalinga war, during 3rd century B.C during the region of Ashoka was fought on Dhauli which is considered as one of the deadliest wars in Indian history. It was fought between the Mauryan Empire and Kalinga Kingdom. After the war, Ashoka chose to follow the path of Buddhism at this place only.

Buddha Shanti Stupa also known as peace pagoda is one of the major attractions. Dhauli is the only witness of reform of Ashoka’s character. The war was so deadliest that Daya river’s water turned red with blood of soldiers because of the massacre which led to significant change in the beliefs of King Ashoka and then, he adopted Buddhism.

Shanti Stupa

Shanti stupa or Buddhist Peace Pagoda is the main tourist attraction. Shanti Stupa is a beautiful white building covered with the dome on its top and beautiful carvings on its walls. It is located at a distance of 7 km from Bhubaneswar. There are four giant statue of Buddha, situated in all corner of stupa.

Bhaskareshwar Temple

Bhaskareshwar Temple is a famous temple located at Tankapani road. Many Ashokan edicts and a Stupa are located in the premises of Bhaskareshwar Temple.

The Edicts of Ashoka located in Dhauli are a collection of thirty inscriptions on the Pillars of Ashoka, as well as boulders and cave walls, attributed to Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire who ruled during 3rd century BCE.
