Ratnagiri Odisha is an ancient Buddhist heritage site located in Jajpur, Odisha. According to the Historians, the city was established during the 5th century during the reign of Gupta kings.

Ratnagiri in Odisha is considered as one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in India. Ratnagiri was Odisha’s very own Nalanda University. Large number of Buddhist scholars from all over the world came to Ratnagiri to acquire knowledge.

History of Ratnagiri Odisha

The Buddhist monuments of Ratnagiri were established during the 5th century CE and were completed in the 13th century. The peak period of work was done between the 7th to 10th centuries. It took nearly 900 years to complete this site.

Buddhism started to decline from Odisha from the 14th century and completely disappeared in Odisha in the 16th century. After the 16th century the site was ruined and people came to know about it during the 1960s when major campaigns of excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India (“ASI”) revealed about the Ratnagiri with large quantities of very fine sculpture.
