Bali Yatra roots back to the ancient times of the 4th to 5th century BC when, traders or merchants from Kalinga, present-day Odisha embarked on sea voyages to trade with the Indonesian Islands of Bali, Java, and Sri Lanka.
They predicted the growth of seaports because of the connected ports with other countries. At that time the Bay of Bengal was only known as the “sea of Kalingas”. Because of these, Kalingas are also known as the “Lord of the Sea”.
Local people believe that Bali Yatra was started at that time when 2000 families of the Kalinga empire decided to migrate to Bali. People organize Bali Jatra to celebrate the skills of trades of Kalingas. According to history, they mostly traded papers, silk, gold, silver, etc. So, the Bali Jatra festival honors those traders who mark a skill of trade in those islands.

Bali Yatra will begin on the 27th of November, 2023, at the Barabati Fort area of Cuttack and the ghats of the Mahanadi River. This year, for the first time there will be a 9-day-long special laser light show on 10 videos of the history of Cuttack.

Bali Yatra was conducted in a bigger way in 2022. It was celebrated from 8th November to 17th November. It put a name in the Guinness Book of World Records by making 23000 boats in 35min by 2100 students.
Bali Jatra 2024
The next Bali Yatra will start on 27th November at the Bank of Mahanadi. In 2023 they are again planning to make a unique record by making 10000 boats in just 15 mins. And second annual Bali Jatra is likely to be held on an outskirt of Bhubaneswar at the banks of the Khukari River from 23rd November to 30th November.
