Ratnavali Shakti Peeth, Hooghly

Ratnavali Shakti Peeth is one of the popular Hindu temples, situated on the banks of Ratnakar River at Khanakul-Krishnanagar in Hooghly district of West Bengal. At this Shakti Peeth Maa Sati is worshiped as ‘Kumari’ and the lord Shiva is worshiped as ‘Bhairav’. The temple is also known as Anandamayee Sakthi Peetha.

According to the Hindu legends, Ratnavali Shakti Peeth is considered as one among the 51 Shakti Peeth dedicated to Goddess Sati. It is believed that the dakshina skandha (right shoulder) of the Goddess Sati had fallen here, at the place of fall of the Right Shoulder of goddess, this Shakti peeth was constructed.

History behind the origin of Ratnavali Shakti Peeth

There are many stories which are related to the establishment of Shakti peeth located in India and neighboring countries. A popular story is about the death of the goddess Sati, wife of Lord shiva.

Prajapati Daksha, father of goddess Sati was son of Lord Brahma. Goddess Sati was fully devoted to Lord Shiva and wanted to marry him but his father wanted her to marry another man as he didn’t like Lord Shiva due to his appearance.

But she married Lord Shiva against her father’s choice. Prajapati Daksha didn’t like Lord Shiva and his way of living a simple life and appearance. One day Prajapati Daksha held a Yagna in which he invited all the gods and goddesses including his father Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu but he didn’t invite Lord Shiva.

Goddess Sati came to know about the news about the yagna and went to her father’s. Lord Shiva tried much to stop the Goddess but she went to her parents house. Her father , Daksha Prajapati started insulting Lord Shiva on his appearance and the way he lives his life. Hearing all those hateful words for her husband, the Goddess couldn’t bear anymore and sacrificed herself there by jumping in the yagna fire.

Lord Shiva was filled with much anger, carried Sati’s body, and started tandav Nritya around the world. Lord Vishnu, in order to save the universe, cut goddess Sati’s body into 51 body parts, with his Sudarshana Chakra, which fell on 51 different places on the earth which is known as shakti peeth and became holy pilgrimage sites where people can pay homage to the goddess Sati and can worship shakti and Lord Shiva.

Most of the Shakti Peetha are located in India, but out of 51 Shakti Peethas seven are located in Bangladesh, three in Pakistan, three in Nepal, and one each in Tibet, Sri Lanka and Bhutan.
