Shakti Peeth are the significant shrines and an important pilgrimage destination of Hinduism. The shrines are dedicated to goddess Kali, Goddess Gouri and Goddess Durga in various forms of Adi Shakti, who is the only female goddess created with the power of all male gods to save the earth from evil. Various Puranas such as Srimad Devi Bhagavatam state the number of existing  Shakti Peeth as 51, 52, 64 and 108 out of which 18 are named as Astadasha Maha or major Shakti Peeth in medieval Hindu texts.

Story of Sati

Various legends explain the story behind the establishment of Shakti Pithas. The most popular story is about the death of the goddess Sati, wife of Lord shiva. After the death of goddess sati. Shivji filled with grief and sorrow, as well as anger Lord Shiva carried Sati’s body, remembering about their moments as a couple, they spended and roamed around the universe along with Body and started Tandav Nritya.

Lord Vishnu, in order to save the universe, cut her body into 51 body parts, with his Sudarshana Chakra, which fell on 51 different places on the earth and became holy pilgrimage sites where people can pay homage to the goddess Sati and can worship her and Lord Shiva transform in the form of Bhairava.

Most of the Shakti peeth of goddess Sati are located in India, but out of 51 Shakti Peeth, seven are in Bangladesh, three in Pakistan, three in Nepal, and one each in Tibet, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. Shakti Peeth means “Seat of Shakti”. It is often called a sacred place of eternal power for Hinduism.

As per Hindu mythology, shakti peeth are considered as the place of significant shrines or major pilgrimage sites, where hindu can pay homage to goddess Sati. It is believed that Shakti peeth are the holy places where body parts of Goddess Sati’s or piece of her jewelry fell on the earth. It is also believed that visiting the Shakti Pithas fulfills all the wishes of devotees.

According to various Hinduism sources, there are 51 Shakti Peeth out of which 18 are major Shakti Piths. Most of the Shakti Peeth are located in India and few of them are located in neighboring countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

Origin of Shakti Peeth

According to hindu mythology, There are various stories related behind the origins of all Shakti Peeth. The most popular story behind the origin of the Shakti peethis the story about Devi Sati who was the first wife of Lord Shiva. Adi Shakti took a human avatar inorder to marry Lord Shiva  and was the daughter of Prajapati Daksha who was a Brahmin priest and son of Lord Brahma.

She was named Princess Sati. Goddess Sati wished to marry Lord Shiva. But, king Daksha did not like Lord Shiva because of his appearance and lifestyle. He wanted his daughter to marry the king. Despite Devi Sati married Lord Shiva and arrived at her new home in Mount Kailash and mesmerized by its beauty. Devi Sati was very happy as she got her love as her husband.

Lord Shiva Shiva also known as Mahadeva ‘The Great God’ is the main deity of Hinduism. He is the Supreme Being in Shaivism, one of the major traditions within Hinduism.

Shiva is known as “The Destroyer” within the Trimurti, the Hindu trinity which also includes Brahma and Vishnu and Mahadeva. In the Shaivite tradition, Shiva is the Supreme Lord who creates, protects and transforms the universe.

Once Goddess Sati’s father Daksha Prajapati organized a biggest Yagya. In which he invited all the gods and goddesses except his daughter and Son-in-law i.e., Mata Sati and Lord Shiva. Mata Sati wanted to attend the Yagya organized by her father and to ask her father why he didn’t invite them but Mahadev did not want to send Mata Sati to her father’s Yagya. But she attended the yagya. At yagya, Daksha insulted  Lord Shiva publicly in front of all gods and goddesses and people. Hearing this insult about her husband by her father Goddess Sati cannot bear it and ended her life by entering in the fire of Yagya.

Seeing Devi Sati burning the yagya fire. Lord Shiva loses his temper and destroys the Yagya. He killed Daksha Prajapati. When everyone requested mercy Lord Shiva restored Daksha Prajapati’s life but with the head of a goat. Lord Shiva picked up buring body of Sati Mata’s and started his Tandav Nritya in the sky.

To save the world from the harm by Tandav Nritya of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu separated Mahadev from Sati Mata’s body. He sent his Sudarshan Chakra to the Goddess Sati which cut Sati Mata’s body into 51 parts. It is believed that the places where these parts fell are known as Shakti peethas. There are a total of 51 Shakti Peeth as the body of Goddess Sati was cut in 51 pieces and this fell separately at 51 places.

Mahammaya Temple located in Amarnath is known as Mahamayi Shakti Peeth. Its is one of the major holy religious places for Hinduism. Temple is situated on the Amarnath mountain in Jammu and Kashmir. It is believed that this temple is about 5000 thousand years old and is located in the holy cave of Amarnath in Jammu and Kashmir.

The temple is considered as one of the 52 Shakti peeth of Goddess sati. In the Amarnath temple Shakti is worshiped as ‘Mahamaya’ and Bhairav or Lord Shiva is worshiped as ‘ Trisandhyasvar ‘. The temple is situated in the lap of Shivalik range of Kangra valley called “Kalidhar”.

Tripurmalini Shakti Peeth

Tripurmalini Shakti Peeth is one of the 51 major Shakti peethsituated in Jalandhar, Punjab. It is also a sacred religious destination of Hindu. The Tripurmalini Shakti Peeth is dedicated to Devi Sati or Shakti, who was the wife of Lord Shiva and worshiped by a large number of Hindu devotees.

It is believed that the Left Breast of Goddess Sati fell here, where the temple is constructed. This Peetha is situated about 1 km away from Jalandhar Railway Station in the state of Punjab in India.

Savitri Shakti Peethas, Kurukshetra

Savithri Shakti Peeth temple is one of the 51 Shakti peethdedicated to Goddess Sati. In this Shakti peethGoddess Sati is worshiped as Bhadrakali, a form of Shakti and Lord shiva is worshiped as Sthanu Mahadev. The temple is located near the Dwaipayan Lake in Thanesar town in Kurukshetra district of Haryana.

It is believed that the chin of Goddess Sati fell here at the place where the temple is constructed. Lord Vishnu cut Goddess Sati’s body with his Sudarshana Chakra inorder to save the universe.

Here Goddess Sati is worshiped as Bhramari or Chibuka which means Chinand and Lord Shiva is known as Vriktaksh/Vikrakatakkha  (one with crooked eyes) or Sarvasiddhish (one who grants all wishes).

Suchindram Shakti Peeth , Kanyakumari

Suchindram Shakti Peeth is one of the 51 major Shakti peethof goddess Sati. This Shakti Peeth is located at the southernmost district of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. The holy temple Suchindram Shakti peetha is dedicated to Goddess Durga, a form of Goddess Sati. At this Shakti Peeth goddess Sati is worshiped as Maa Narayani and Lord shiva is worshiped as Sangharor Samhara.
